What A Transfer Switch Does

A transfer switch connects your home to either the utility or the generator, never both at once. That matters for two reasons. It keeps generator power from flowing back onto the utility lines, which can injure line workers and damage the generator. It also stops utility power from hitting the generator when the grid comes back. The electrical code requires approved transfer equipment for any generator connected to a home’s wiring.

Automatic Or Manual Transfer Switch

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) watches the utility supply. When the power goes out, it starts the standby generator and moves the load over on its own. When the power comes back, it switches back and lets the generator cool down. That is what most standby generator installations use, because it works even when nobody is home.

A manual transfer switch is flipped by hand. It is the usual choice for a portable generator hookup, together with an outdoor power inlet. A listed panel interlock is another manual option, where one is available for your panel.

Whole-Home Or Essential Circuits

A service-rated automatic transfer switch goes between the meter and your main panel, and it doubles as the service disconnect. It lets the generator back up the whole house. An essential-circuits switch feeds a small panel with only the circuits you choose, which suits a smaller generator.

With a whole-home switch, load management can switch off large loads like a second A/C or a pool heater when the generator is near capacity. We help you choose based on your generator size, your panel and your budget.

When A Transfer Switch Needs Inspection Or Replacement

Do not open a transfer switch or try to force it over by hand. It can carry live utility and generator power at the same time. Call a licensed electrician.

Recent Work: 200 Amp Upgrade With Transfer Switch In Pembroke Pines

In Pembroke Pines we took a home from 100 to 200 amp service with a new generator transfer switch, coordinated the service change with FPL and passed the city inspection. The photos below are from that job.

Three views of a 200 amp service upgrade in Pembroke Pines: the meter and generator transfer switch outside, the inside of the transfer switch, and the new electrical panel

Our Installation Process

We confirm the generator size, the service size and where the switch will mount, then pull the permit. When the work involves the service, we coordinate with FPL on the disconnect. We install the switch and its control wiring, then test it: a simulated outage, a transfer to the generator, and a transfer back to the utility. The inspector signs off, and we show you what the switch does. Planning a new generator too? See whole-home generator installation.

We hired Patrick for electrical work in our commercial space, and he went above and beyond. He was prompt, gave a fair quote, and kept communication clear the whole way. He handled all the work professionally, passed the inspection that was required, and even came back to make sure everything was perfect. Super reliable and easy to deal with. Highly recommended.

Patrick and his team were outstanding. When one of my breaker boxes started to fail, Patrick came out the very same day and quickly diagnosed the problem. He had a new breaker box installed and everything up and running the following day. Since then, everything has worked perfectly. What impressed me most was the professionalism and courtesy of Patrick, his nephew who assisted him, and another electrician on the crew. All three were knowledgeable, respectful, and a pleasure to work with. The highlight of the experience, though, was hearing Patrick's two employees talk about him. They both spoke with genuine gratitude about the opportunities he's given them and the mentorship he's provided throughout their careers. It's clear that Patrick isn't just an exceptional electrician, but also an exceptional leader who invests in the people around him. The world needs more people like Patrick, professionals who not only take pride in their work but also take the time to guide and develop the next generation. I highly recommend Patrick and his team for any electrical work. They truly earned every one of these five stars.

Transfer Switch FAQs

What is an automatic transfer switch?

An automatic transfer switch watches your utility power. During an outage, it starts your standby generator and moves your home onto generator power. When utility power returns, it switches back automatically.

Do I need a transfer switch for a portable generator?

If you want to power circuits in your home from a portable generator, yes. You need approved transfer equipment, such as a manual transfer switch or a listed panel interlock, with an outdoor power inlet. Never backfeed through an outlet.

What is a service-rated transfer switch?

A service-rated switch is installed between the meter and your main panel and also acts as the service disconnect. It is the usual way to back up a whole home.

Can you replace an existing transfer switch?

Yes. We replace switches that have failed, are too small for a new generator or were installed wrong, and we fix wiring problems between the switch and the generator.

Does a transfer switch need a permit?

Yes. Transfer switch installation is permitted electrical work. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

Will my power be off during the installation?

Yes, for part of the job. We schedule the shutdown with you and coordinate with FPL when the work involves the service.

Are your estimates free?

Yes. Call or text (954) 636-4288 or request one through our contact page.
