For most homes, the right fit is a Generac Guardian Series generator. It is an air-cooled home standby unit that Generac offers from 10 to 26 kW, running on natural gas or propane. Every Generac installation includes a transfer switch. For most homes that is an automatic transfer switch, and often a service-rated one mounted by the meter, so the generator can back up the whole house. See transfer switch installation for how that works.
We size the Generac to what you want running, not to your square footage. Central A/C usually sets the size because of its starting surge. If the ideal unit is more than you want to spend, Generac load management modules can switch off large loads, like a second A/C or a pool heater, when the generator is near capacity. That lets a smaller unit cover the whole house. We price the options side by side.
