A transfer switch connects your home to either the utility or the generator, never both at once. That matters for two reasons. It keeps generator power from flowing back onto the utility lines, which can injure line workers and damage the generator. It also stops utility power from hitting the generator when the grid comes back. The electrical code requires approved transfer equipment for any generator connected to a home’s wiring.
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) watches the utility supply. When the power goes out, it starts the standby generator and moves the load over on its own. When the power comes back, it switches back and lets the generator cool down. That is what most standby generator installations use, because it works even when nobody is home.
A manual transfer switch is flipped by hand. It is the usual choice for a portable generator hookup, together with an outdoor power inlet. A listed panel interlock is another manual option, where one is available for your panel.
A service-rated automatic transfer switch goes between the meter and your main panel, and it doubles as the service disconnect. It lets the generator back up the whole house. An essential-circuits switch feeds a small panel with only the circuits you choose, which suits a smaller generator.
